Conference

In 1985, the task force planned and implemented its first annual conference. This longstanding tradition takes place each March, providing education and promotion focused on aging services to minority elders. This grassroots conference is geared towards professionals and elders. Conference highlights include CEU certified workshops, meeting with representatives of local, state, and federal organizations, nationally renowned speakers, lectures on key issues, renewing old friendships, and coming together to respect and celebrate our heritages.

The first day of the conference provides a full day of intensives focused on grassroots education and training. Remaining days provide an array of workshops on individual topics. A favorite event is the Cultural Showcase, which highlights a variety of heritages. It is an evening of entertainment, celebration, and education.

The 2008 conference, ”MIND over MATTER: What Matters in Aging“ will be held in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma on March 26-28, 2008.

Workshop sessions will include a variety of topics:
Spirituality and Aging
Caregiving
Cultural Diversity
Mental Health among Diverse Populations
Best Practices
And many more...

At each conference, the task force honors individuals across the state who work in the field of aging. Amoung the awards are Outstanding Information and Assistance, Outstanding Nutrition Project Director, and Outstanding Outreach, but the most prestigious honor is named after one of the founding members of the task force, Betsy Davis Smith. This award is given to a citizen who is dedicated to advocating for the elderly to the public on local, state, and national levels. This is a person who is hardworking, compassionate, and responsive to the needs the senior population faces.
